Hunger Awareness Banquet, hosted by Cynthia Smoot, Fox 13 News Anchor. St. Petersburg
Free Clinic honors individuals annually with the Margin of Excellence Award, recognizing their
contributions to the Free Clinic’s work of helping to feed the hungry. More than 300 guests
were in attendance at St. Petersburg’s First Presbyterian Church to hear State Representative
Bill Heller, Shahra Anderson, Regional Director for U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, and a recorded
message from Sen. Nelson.

Honored Margin of Excellence Award Winners who received a special “Soup Can Award” are:
Lydia Brown, a volunteer at Free Clinic Beacon House who, since 1995, has been instrumental
in coordinating church groups to prepare and serve Sunday evening hot meals (at Beacon
House) to anyone in the community who is hungry; Charlean and Jerry Schubert, who have
organized CROP (Community Responding to Overcome Poverty) Walks since 1989; Genavers
“Hawk” Hawkins, recently retired Food Bank supervisor who worked 21 years for the Free
Clinic. Awards presenter Mary Wyatt Allen commented, “Hawk has said ‘no problem’ so often
that he has forgotten to decide if there is a problem. He always gets the job done.”
