A 30 year old with no insurance and a part-time job was
referred to the Free Clinic Health Center for diabetic
care. Newly diagnosed, this patient was on oral
medications and insulin. When he saw the medical staff,
he complained of intermittent blurred vision. As a
diabetic, he was missing a very important component of
doctor. The blurred vision was a result of diabetic
retinopathy - bleeding in the eyes.
Beginning March 1, the Free Clinic, collaborating with
the Pinellas County Health Department and 2 volunteer
eye physicians, will be providing annual eye exams for
diabetic patients. The eye exams will be performed at
the Health Department with equipment on loan to them
from the Free Clinic. The Free Clinic acquired this
equipment when an ophthalmologist donated it to us.
